The book contains 33 chapters with 360 pages of over one thousand images and photographs. It presents the first known detailed history in print of every type of rollsign used on the BMT and IND (including Staten Island Rapid Transit) from 1914 with the BMT STANDARDS through the R-38's into the 1970's. Also included are the rollsigns and plate signs used in all of the experimental subway and elevated cars.
Ancillary items include subway marker lights, rollsign boxes, lanterns, train annunciators, station and platform signage, maps, employee badges, miscellaneous advertisements, station entrance globes, unification and integration of the BMT and IND, subway car drawings and lesser known signage used throughout this period.
